Building Partnerships to Help Disabled Children

Early Arrivals
Early Arrivals

Hello from Dumaguete City, Philippines!

On Friday, February 1st, we conducted a medical clinic for physically disabled children in Dumaguete City located on Negros Island in the Philippines.  With the help of our partners, we were able to examine 87 children with a variety of disabilities and began to form a plan of treatment for those that can be helped!

Preparation

Over the last 18 months, we have transported and supported three children to the Tebow Cure Hospital in Davao for surgery to correct orthopedic issues.  During that time, we have worked to build a partnership with the management at the hospital, and they expressed to us their desire to expand their ministry to different islands in the Philippines.  In October, the Director of the Tebow Cure Hospital offered us a chance to partner with them to hold a clinic on the island of Negros.

Once a date was set, we approached two local ministries in the area, Little Children of the Philippines (LCP), and Bear Much Fruit Ministry (BMFM) to help us find children in the area with a need for these services.  Both organizations have a long history of family support in Dumaguete city and the rural areas of Negros Oriental.  We agreed on a sign-up system and developed promotional materials to inform the communities.  Additionally, Cast Your Nets Ministry took on the task of informing local government agencies and to canvass the nearby island of Siquijor.  Through these efforts, we were able to pre-register 85 children for the clinic day.

Clinic Day

The team from Tebow Cure Hospital arrived the day before the clinic and we were able to meet with them at the venue and make final decisions for the clinic process.  We also had the chance to discuss the future of the hospital to expand its services to other areas, and what assistance they could possibly offer us and the children in the future.

On February 1st, patients started arriving around 7:15 am and our volunteers didn’t miss a beat even though we were starting to register 45 minutes early.  The hospital team began to see patients around 8:00 am and worked until 4:15 pm with a short 45-minute lunch break.  As mentioned above, they were able to see and evaluate 87 children and minister to their spiritual and emotional needs.  Of those 87 children, we had several children (around 20) that were born with club foot disorder, several that suffer from cerebral palsy, five or six that will need orthotics or prosthetics due birth defects or accidents, and a variety of other conditions.  Due to planning and organization by all partners, we were able to process those that traveled long distances by bus or ferry and get them back on the road as quickly as possible.  All our partners did a tremendous job and we thank them for their efforts.

Follow-up Plans

Now that the children have been evaluated, we are beginning to work with our local partners, LCP and BMFM, to formulate treatment plans and a schedule for those that require surgery.  We are also engaging in talks with Tebow Cure Hospital to develop an efficient and workable process to treat the large number of children with club feet.  Normally, this is treated with a four to eight-week casting process followed by surgery, and requires the child and a guardian travel to Davao and stay the entire time as the casts are changed each week.  As you can see, this would require a long stay for several people and would cause numerous family issues for those left behind.  No matter the outcome of these talks, it will still be necessary to transport and house several children in Davao for surgery or treatment.  Your donations are so valuable to us in this process!

Thank you for your support!
