Our Jinja Librarian David approached me about having a Christmas party for the kids who patron his library. As we are opperating on a limited budget, I told him ok, but that he had a budget of 300,000ush- or about $92. He said fine, and while I was expecting a bit of singing and maybe a soda for each child- he made magic happen.
David partnered with another NGO in Jinja, and included the Librarian Peter from our econd Jinja library and his children. Together, they put on a party where they hung tarpalins for shade, brought out chairs, decorations, sodas, organized the children into singing and dancing routines for the community. They worked with one of the ladies from the Women's Group Lubanga Twero- the governing body of the libraries- to make puppets and the children put on both a puppet show, and acted out a play depicting the birth of Christ. This all took place at the Danita masese 2 library, as the women of Lubanga Twero attended and watched proudly.
After the festivities, they hired a coaster and brought the whole lot to the beach for more fun and games. They played with a parachute, a bouncing castle, and swam in an above-ground pool (They did not swim in the lake because 1- the risk of drowning, and 2- crocodiles.)
The initiative and dedication of our librarians is truly astounding, and I am proud of them beyond words.
