"This guy is called Ochan, he will never let me go [he is mentally handicapped], he is 14 years old, he has never stepped in a classroom, but he is passionate about reading. During school days, he comes to the library and I teach him a lot, I see tremendous change in him. In short, a lot of people have been asking me 'okikola otya?' 'how do u do it?' The answer is simple, "I love what I do."
This is a short testimonial from our Librarian David regarding one of his library kids. Ochan was born mentally handicapped, and due to nearly non existent facilities for the mentally handicapped, he has had no education appart from what he has been taught at his home, and in the library. Our libraries are not open until 2pm on school days as the libraries are not intended to be a replacement for schooling. But as Ochan does not attend school, David lives near the library, and the library is actually on the property of Ochan's Grandmother Jaja Margaret- he get's special privlidges and is often allowed into the library even during closed hours.
