As we are all witnessing the escalation across the region especially in Lebanon where the disaster expanding, and as GEM operates across the region—especially in times of emergency for LGBTQIA+ communities—we are reaching out to share an update on our response and to highlight the multiple challenges our communities are facing during the ongoing emergency, in Lebanon and the region.
GEM is currently receiving an overwhelming number of requests for support, with dozens of urgent cases and a waiting list exceeding $50,000 in unmet urgent needs. These needs include critical support such as emergency shelter for displaced individuals, including both displaced Lebanese individuals and refugees who have been displaced again due to the war in Lebanon.
This emergency comes at a time when we are facing significant operational challenges. GEM is at risk of shutting down its operations by May, as we have not yet secured the necessary funding to sustain our work.
