Since the first 48 hours of the war in Lebanon, the Guardians of Equality Movement (GEM) launched an emergency response in the country, where many of our beneficiaries live as refugees. We received countless urgent appeals from individuals under attack many of whom are disabled, isolated, and lacking access to the most basic necessities such as food, hygiene items, and shelter. We knew we had to act immediately—and thanks to your support, we were able to save hundreds of lives.
In response to the escalating crisis, GEM launched a rapid emergency program focused on LGBTQIA+ individuals affected by the conflict in Lebanon. Within 48 hours of the war's outbreak, GEM began distributing emergency cash assistance to displaced LGBTQIA+ people to meet their urgent needs during temporary displacement.
As the violence continued, the needs of our community grew rapidly. By October 25, GEM had provided over 170 emergency cash grants and received more than 400 additional requests. Every appeal we received came from someone directly affected by the military escalation and the resulting displacement crisis.
To respond to the growing needs, GEM expanded its efforts to include emergency mental health support, offering Psychological First Aid (PFA) sessions alongside cash relief and case management.
So far, GEM has supported over 300 LGBTQIA+ individuals in Lebanon with emergency assistance. However, we are now facing an extreme funding shortage. More than 200 people remain on our waiting list—people in urgent need of help—and we currently lack the resources to respond.
Your support is needed now more than ever. Help us continue this life-saving work.
