Teach For Lebanon (TFL) is a Lebanese NGO working to ensure that all children in Lebanon, regardless of socioeconomic background, have equal access to excellent education. Our core project is the TFL Fellowship. Under this project, we recruit and train qualified, motivated university graduates and young professionals, our fellows, and place them in underprivileged school communities to serve as teachers for two years.
Educational inequity in Lebanon deprives tens of thousands of children of the opportunity to realize their potential. Lebanese public schools are underfunded and understaffed, and the national curriculum is outdated. Moreover, in a country where half of the population is living below the poverty level and a third are refugees to whom basic human rights are not granted, education is low on the priority lists of many families. This project provides holistic support to Lebanese school communities.
TFL fellows work on improving the learning outcomes of underprivileged students. On top of serving as teachers in the schools in which they are placed, our fellows provide their students with homework support, organize extracurricular activities, and raise awareness of important issues (such as gender-based violence, mental health, and climate change) among school community members (including students, other school workers, and families).
The TFL fellowship program is impactful on multiple levels: It kickstarts the careers of promising Lebanese youth (our fellows) and welcomes them into an active alumni network. It improves the learning outcomes of underprivileged students and grants them opportunities for academic and personal growth. It provides support and training to school community members. All of this, we believe, will lead to a better future for our fellows, our students, their communities, and Lebanon as a whole.
