Psychosocial activity for children affected by Ty Odette (I.N. Rai)
CDRC with Caraga Cares volunteer teachers conducted psychosocial activities for children during the conduct of the Early Recovery project in Brgy. Alang-Alang, Surigao City.
During the conduct of the area visit, some children were still crying due to strong thunder and rain. CDRC recognized the harmful effects of a disaster on children, with this series of psychosocial activities was conducted. Various fun activities including community risk mapping, drawings, coloring group/activities/playing, and singing. This activity served as a platform to reduce the post-disaster stress of community members and fostered adaptive mechanisms for them. Each attendee was given an activity/training kit which included a pencil, notebook/pad paper/bond paper, crayons, alcohol, soap, and a hand towel. A brief discussion on disaster risk reduction (DRR) terminologies and sharing of the children’s Ty Rai experiences were highlighted. After that, they were asked to map out their community/barangay (Spot Map). To identify the typhoon risk areas on their
map, (Hazard Map), they were asked to paste three emojis/emoticons: smile for low risk, sad for high risk, and confused for medium risk.
