The CDRC team, together with Caraga Cares Volunteers conducted a Courtesy Call to the City Hall and a consultation meeting with the community members in the island barangays of Surigao City.
During the area visits and consultation meetings, community members shared the damages that Typhoon Odette left their communities. 80% of community members were fisherfolk, during the interviews, their fishing boats and fishing materials were totally damaged. Coconut trees were felled, according to coconut farmers it will take five years for them to harvest again. For them to recover they need to have fishing boats, fishing materials, and capital for alternative livelihood while waiting for the coconut trees to recover.
Teachers and school principals were interviewed about the situation in their school: classrooms were damaged, printers and school materials were soaked in water, and electricity was shut down.
Most of the houses were damaged and roofs were blown away by the strong wind. With all these results of TY Odette, the responses from the government were far away for them to recover.
Next plan:
1. Continuous fundraising
2. Organizing volunteers on the ground
3. Conduct psychosocial activities for children.
