Keeping the Light of Learning Alive in Guntur's Slums

By Joseph Anthony A Chukka | Project Leader

Dear Friends and Partners,

Greetings and best wishes to you from the BASS Learning Centres for Slum Children in Guntur, India.

We are writing to share an honest update on our project over the past few months (March to June 2026). While our project has been active on GlobalGiving for the last two years, we have faced a deeply challenging period with very limited financial support, raising a total of just $380 since inception and receiving no new donations during this last quarter. While this lack of funding brings us immense sadness, it has not diminished our dedication to the children who rely on us every day.

Academic Triumph and New Beginnings In spite of these severe financial constraints, we are incredibly proud to report that our 6 after-school learning centres are operating effectively and thriving in the slums of Guntur. More than 200 children regularly attend these centers, guided by dedicated teachers who are committed to delivering quality education.

The 2025–2026 academic year concluded successfully in April. To minimize learning loss, we gave our children just a short two-week summer break in May, while formal schools closed for 40 days. We are thrilled to share that 100% of the children in our centers passed their classes with distinction and have been proudly promoted to their next grades!

On June 12, 2026, the new academic year officially commenced. All 6 centers have reopened their doors, welcoming back our regular students along with a wonderful influx of newly enrolled children eager to learn.

Why Your Support is More Critical Than Ever Our after-school centers provide a vital lifeline for children who would otherwise fall through the cracks of the education system. Many were previously dropouts or had never enrolled in school. Our centers bridge this gap, helping them catch up to regular academic standards while instilling essential social behaviours and life skills.

Furthermore, these centers offer a safe, physical sanctuary. Most of our students live in cramped slum housing lacking proper lighting or a quiet space to study. At our centers, they find bright rooms, structured guidance from supportive teachers, and a focused environment to complete their homework.

An Urgent Appeal to Join Our Mission To keep these vital spaces open, we humbly ask for your urgent support. The monthly cost to sustain just one center is $350. This modest sum fully covers:

  • Essential teacher salaries
  • Building rent
  • Learning and writing materials
  • Daily nutritious snacks (which often serve as the primary evening sustenance for these vulnerable children)

Your contribution—no matter the size—directly transforms a child's future, turning despair into opportunity. Please consider making a donation today to help us keep these 6 centers running through this new academic year.

With heartfelt gratitude for your kindness and solidarity,

The BASS India Team
