Summary

Challenge: Amidst poverty, violence, and educational disparities, South African teens face daily struggles that threaten their educational outcomes. Solution: The Mudita Foundation's Learn2Learn program will support 400 vulnerable South African teens near Cape Town in 2024, providing psycho-social support, mentorship, and skills training, increasing their abilities to stay in school or pursue vocational training for a resilient and successful future.

Challenge

In 2023, 715,719 full-time students registered to write their matric (grade 12) exams. Only 691,160 students wrote, of whom 572,983 passed. Sadly 24,559 students dropped out between registering and writing their finals. Even more tragic, is the 33.3% of students who dropped out between Grade 10 and grade 12 - a massive 345,626 students from the 2023 cohort. The real matric pass rate of 2023 was only 55.3%. Our low-income teens lack the necessary skills and support to stay in school and pass.

Solution

The Learn2Learn program is a dynamic response to the pressing challenges faced by at-risk high school learners in South Africa. It provides teenagers with skills and support in four key areas necessary for school success and beyond: 1. Learning skills for school and practical life success 2. Emotional & behavioral well-being 3. Personal development 4. Vocational awareness

Long-Term Impact

The project will empower 400 at-risk high school learners in 2024 to become successful learners so they may go on to serve as role models and mentors for future generations, further perpetuating a cycle of positive change.
