The Learn2Learn Journey 2025

South African Institute of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (SAI-CAMH)

Building Futures, One Learner at a Time

In the heart of Eerste River, Cape Town, a quiet transformation is taking place. Teenagers once burdened by poverty, trauma, and uncertainty are beginning to lift their heads a little higher. They are learning not just how to study — but how to believe in themselves.

This is the heart of the Learn2Learn program, a flagship initiative of SAI-CAMH that has become a lifeline for young people in under-resourced schools. Through 20 interactive sessions delivered during the school day, learners discover emotional awareness, resilience, and confidence.

As one facilitator shared:

“They aren’t told who to be. They’re supported in becoming who they already are.”

The Journey So Far

What began as a small pilot in 2020 has blossomed into a structured, replicable model of youth empowerment. Supported by EMpower Emerging Markets Foundation and guided by passionate facilitators — many of whom are former participants themselves — Learn2Learn now reaches hundreds of young people across Cape Town each year.

In 2025, our learners have been exploring four key domains:

  • Emotional and Behavioural Well-being – learning to manage stress and stay grounded in the face of adversity.

  • Personal Development – discovering their voice, boundaries, and confidence.

  • Learning Ability for Practical Life Success – understanding how they learn best and applying those tools in class.

  • Vocational Awareness – imagining futures that go beyond their current circumstance.

Each week, learners gather in small, supportive circles. They journal, reflect, laugh, and sometimes cry. It’s not a classroom — it’s a community.

Learners Speak: Finding Calm, Finding Purpose

Our learners’ words tell the story best:

“It helped me realise that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed sometimes. During exams, I used the breathing techniques we learned. I felt more in control instead of panicking.” — JF, Grade 10 Learner

“The session on values and future goals helped me think more deeply about what I want in life — and why school matters.”

For many, this program is the first time someone has asked them: What are your strengths? What lights you up?

And in that question lies transformation.

The Educators’ Perspective: Change They Can See

Teachers have witnessed a noticeable shift in their classrooms. One remarked:

“Their mindsets have shifted towards learning. When you come, they already know the atmosphere will be different.” — CD, Educator

Another teacher shared:

“Based on their tests, the way they answer the questions is different. It’s additional knowledge that they get from you.” — MS, Educator

Educators describe learners as more self-aware, more engaged, and more open in expressing themselves — especially in Life Orientation lessons where emotional literacy is key.

Learn2Learn isn’t replacing formal education; it’s enriching it — helping teachers and learners reconnect with purpose.

“Your participation has allowed them to open up more. I can see the difference in how they relate to others.” — MS, 2025

Creating Safe Spaces for Growth

Every Learn2Learn session begins with a simple premise: emotional safety first. Learners need to feel seen and heard before they can truly learn.

Our facilitators — once learners themselves — know this deeply. They lead sessions with empathy and patience, creating environments where young people can take emotional risks, make mistakes, and grow together.

“My main learning was the importance of having a safe space where learners feel comfortable sharing openly and honestly.” — Learn2Learn Intern Facilitator

Across all 15 sessions evaluated this year, emotional safety scored 2.6 out of 3 and learner engagement averaged 4.2 out of 5 — evidence of the trust and enthusiasm built within each group.

Voices from the Future: Alumni Giving Back

Perhaps the most inspiring part of Learn2Learn’s growth story is the alumni who now return as mentors.

These young leaders, once shy and uncertain, now stand confidently before new cohorts — guiding, listening, and teaching from experience.

“Being a facilitator made me realise that making a difference isn’t always about doing big things. It’s in the small stuff — listening when a learner needs to talk, helping someone see their potential, or making sure they feel safe and heard.” — CJ, Alumni Facilitator, 2025

Through their involvement, alumni develop vital professional skills: communication, adaptability, teamwork, and leadership. But beyond skills, they discover something even more profound — that healing and growth multiply when shared.

A Different Kind of Learning Space

Learn2Learn sessions are not about lectures or exams — they’re about connection. Facilitators sing songs, play games, and spark deep reflection through creative exercises.

“When we read the poem or sang the song, they didn’t want to stop. You could see joy and learning happening at the same time.” — Facilitator Reflection

These moments — small but powerful — create ripples that extend beyond the classroom. Learners carry what they’ve learned into their homes, friendships, and communities.

Real Impact, Real Change

Behind every statistic is a young person learning to say: “I matter. I can learn. I can grow.”

Teachers see it in test answers that show deeper thinking. Facilitators see it in quiet students who now raise their hands. Learners feel it when they take a deep breath instead of giving up.

“Ever since you guys started, their mindsets have shifted. They see learning differently now.” — CD, Educator

These transformations are the heart of Learn2Learn’s success.

Moving Forward

As we move into the second half of 2025, our focus remains steadfast: to reach even more learners, deepen our alumni facilitation model, and continue building a generation of emotionally resilient, confident young people who can shape their futures with courage and clarity.

Every session, every conversation, every “aha!” moment adds up to stronger schools, healthier communities, and brighter futures.

“They’re beginning to see their future differently — not just as something to survive, but something they can shape.”

Thank You for Walking Beside Us
