#DEOLHONOLAB: ENCONTRO #SEJOGA E PURA MAO NA MASSA

By Leticia Schuelter de Lima, translated by George G. | Communications Assistant

50 Labbers selected for the fourth SGB Lab came together for the First Meeting (O Primeiro Encontro Presencial). From the 9th through 12th of June, hailing from 13 different states, the Labbers bore through the cold of Santa Catarina and initiated the Lab process in order to develop their social impact projects.

The Meeting took place in the City of Pedra Branca. It was four days of intense yet quick learning with hands on exercises and networking. Edgar Stuber taught this Design Thinking methodology over the course of the long weekend. The Labbers learned how to interview, to create user profiles, to make empathy maps—all of which were based in learning through practice. You can learn more about these entrepreneurship tools here

The Labbers visited local NGOs in Palhoça in the neighborhoods of Frei Damiao, Brejaru, and Ponte do Imaruim. The idea was to fully comprehend the techniques of Design Thinking by putting them to practice, which would culminate in prototyping and finding solutions that they later would represent to the managers of those NGOs. The work of the Labbers climaxed when they delivered those Pitches, which tied together all they had been learning. The presentations were received very positively by the NGO managers, who also gave feedback based on their intimate knowledge of their organizations’ various challenges.

The Lab process emphasized humanization and networking. Each Labber displayed their idea on a poster and received feedbacks by other participants throughout the length of the weekend, which incentive cooperation and growth amongst these entrepreneurs. The last day, the Labbers were separated in groups and asked to reflect on their experiences of the weekend to collaborate, consider new ideas in order to improve their initial conceptions of their personal social impact projects, refine their understanding of why they care about their cause.

After immersing in learning and experience, it was time to return to harness all the energy grown in the Lab. And there is nothing better than a C-H-A-L-L-E-N-G-E for this. The Challenge includes developing and deepening the Labbers’ understanding of their initiatives. The Challenge is due for submission to the Social Good Brasil team on June 3rd. They still have yet to think and rethink and work; they will interview hundreds of stakeholders and apply the Design Thinking methodology to only then return to the drawing board to refine their prototype.

In August, the teams will return to take the next step in the Lab journey, and we can’t wait to see the progress that they will have made. Two months remain still, but there is still so much to do at the second and third in-person Meetings.
