“I am young, smart, active and cute!” are affirmative and powerful words. This simple exercise of validating oneself was one of many ways LEAP empowered over 100 teenagers and young adults who went through its experiential training on leadership and life skills, ethics and community development.
Watching their faces light up week after week (Feb - March 2018) as we sparked their interest in believing in themselves to make the right decision and becoming the beacon of hope for the nation, this kept us going for 4 weeks as we trained 108 teenagers on one of our leadership programme tagged Lead the Way (LTW). The programme is designed for teenagers between the ages of 13 -18 to prepare them in setting clearly defined goals and taking necessary steps to create positive change in their lives and communities.
One of the keys we have found in unlocking the full potential in young people is making the right choice. In life you have a choice and when young people understand this simple philosophy it increases chances of leading themselves or taking control of their life. This key has assisted us in unlocking the full potential in young people in making the right choice.
To create education equity and achieve specific impact this programme was designed for, the beneficiaries were selected from low-mid income families. They were also selected from youth centres run by small social enterprise or foundations and groups in government owned secondary schools within Lagos, Nigeria.
What’s Next?
Since the classroom learning ended in March, the students with their guides/volunteers have been having intermittent discussions on how to improve or positively change their communities.
They have lofty ideas on creating lasting solutions that would be beneficial to their school or host community in general.
We are excited by the progress they have made since participating in this programme and would share more reports on the ideas and actual implementations of these children.
The Lead the Way is one of LEAP’s programmes that is being scaled from its original intervention and deployed to reach a larger group simultaneously.
