Following World Mental Health Day on 10 October, we are reminded of the importance of recognising, understanding and responding to the mental health needs of children and young people. Mental health is fundamental to a child’s overall wellbeing, yet for many children in South Africa, access to the specialist care they need remains out of reach.
In KwaZulu-Natal, the need is particularly urgent. The province is home to more than 4.3 million children, but public-sector inpatient mental health services for young people are severely limited. There is currently only one operational public adolescent mental health unit, with eight beds and no dedicated inpatient beds for younger children. Just two psychiatrists serve the public sector, leaving many children and families without access to essential specialist care.
We believe every child deserves access to the care and support they need to recover, grow and thrive.
The KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital Trust is working to make this a reality through the development of a 36-bed Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit at the historic KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital in Durban. The facility will provide dedicated inpatient care for children and adolescents experiencing mental health challenges, in an environment designed to support their recovery and wellbeing.
The unit will include a 10-bed children’s ward and separate 13-bed wards for male and female adolescents, alongside spaces for counselling, occupational therapy and family support. It will help address a critical gap in public healthcare and give more young people access to appropriate, specialised treatment closer to home.
Turning this vision into reality takes time, resources and continued support.
As we shared in our June update, the project has made important progress through its design, planning and approval stages. We continue working towards the final approval and documentation required to move into construction. While these processes take time, the need for the facility remains pressing, and every step brings us closer to providing this much-needed facility and service.
Donations through GlobalGiving will help the Trust advance this project and bring KwaZulu-Natal’s first dedicated inpatient child and adolescent mental health unit closer to reality. Your support contributes to the work needed to establish a facility that will make a lasting difference to children, adolescents and their families.
World Mental Health Day is an important reminder that young people should not have to face mental health challenges without support. By investing in their wellbeing, we can help create a future in which more children have the opportunity to receive care, recover and reach their potential.
Please continue to support our project and help us make specialist mental health care accessible to the children who need it most. Every contribution brings us one step closer.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
