7th Annual Drama Festival, Creating a Voice for Women in Gulu!

The theme of this years event was Listening to Local Voices. The issues ranged from reintegration after the conflict to equality and women's role in rebuilding the community.

As usual, the drama festival provided provocative plays, songs and dance. The Acholi culture was represented and celebrated; with hundreds of people attending, enjoying the day, elevating women's voices and discussing issues of equality, ending gender based violence, peacebuilding and setting local priorities.

The night before we hosted a community dinner, where two women were honoured with our Women 4 Peace Awards. One of the awardees was Prisca, one of WGEF's first clients, a successful entreprenuer and leader in her community. It was exciting to see her receive this honour as her group members and friends applauded her hard work and commitment to women's equality.

The next day the community gathered to watch women challenge their communities and elected leaders to support women's empowerment. Thru the power of storytelling, drama, songs and dances, women communicated, and demanded that their voices be heard!

This year the trend was unique headresses. Each group of dancers had made costumes which incuded head pieces.I have included photos!

This event is not only a way to celebrate and maintian cultural integrity, but effectively communicates the challenges facing women; providing a stigma free platform for women to express themselves, elevating their voices and creating the space for effective communication and advocacy.

I hope you are inspired and continue to support WGEF! Thank you....
