Selima* is a 6 year old girl, living in Freetown, Sierra Leone, who could no longer stand watching other children eat, while her plate remained empty.
Her parents, Priscilla and Gerald, are both unemployed, and do odd jobs to earn enough to put food on the table. They live close to the We Are the Future school in Aberdeen and she used to come an play around the compound. She saw the children at the We Are the Future school enjoying their lunch, thanks to the Kids Kitchen project, but her parents couldn’t afford the small fees to send her there.
One day she decided to take the matter into her own hands, and although only five, approached John Sandy, the school director, and asked if she could enroll. She was so determined and eloquent, that he discussed it with the school management and they agreed to grant her a scholarship and supply her with a uniform, so she could start immediately. She is now doing very well academically, as well as enjoying her daily lunch.
Priscilla, her mother, is very grateful to the school, saying “Food for school is better than food for work”. Now her daughter attends school, she knows Selima has the chance of a better future. It makes her really proud.
But there are still so many children in and around Freetown who go to school on an empty stomach, often barely receiving one meal per day.
Now, more than ever, we need your help to keep the Kitchen project going so we can reach more schools and more children like Selima.
Little By Little Campaign: your donation goes the extra mile
This week, and this week only, GlobalGiving is running the Little By Little campaign. Every donation you make until March 27th to the Kids Kitchen project, will be matched 50% by GlobalGiving. For example, if you give £20, that's £30 that will go to providing daily lunches to our students in Sierra Leone, at no extra cost to you.
We know you probably have a lot on your mind right now, but we hope you'll consider making a small gift so that we can continue this vital project. The children at the We Are the Future school rely on the generosity of friends like you.
Thank you for your continued trust and support.
