Baking their way to sustainability

By Hollie Bradley | Monitoring and Evaluation Consultant

We would like to express our gratitude for your contributions towards Mr and Mrs Andrews, who founded an organisation called The Community Program in Nababeep, Northern Cape.

The Community Program organisation is committed to transforming their community through four programmes:

  1. GBV programme - which focuses on the effects of GBV in the community and empowering women by helping them learn about their rights and how to protect themselves and speak out,
  2. Life Skills programme - added to the organisations portfolio following training received by RDSP,
  3.  Climate change programme - which focuses on assisting their local primary school with a food garden for their feeding scheme following government funding cuts, and
  4. Sky12 Programme - a programme inspired by their late daughter. Through their daughter’s 2 year cancer journey they realised that things such as toiletry packs, clothing and hospital accessories such as wheelchairs or commodes are essential to helping families cope with hospitalisations and medical treatments hence this programme aims to support families in this regard.

The founders noted that the funding landscape is extremely tough at the moment, so becoming more self-sustainable is critical to enable the organisation to keep doing the amazing work they are doing in their community. They received a Mama Mimi oven donation and thanks to the generous donations through GlobalGiving they were able to purchase ingredients to kick start their self-sustainability / income generation journey.

Through the ingredients purchased from the donation, they have been able to bake bread, pizzas and biscuits using the donated oven. These items are sold in the community. Mr Andrews stated that the pizzas are seen as more of a month end treat for the locals, but the biscuits and bread sell throughout the month. The funds raised by the sales go towards ingredients for the next orders and at the end of the month the profits are utilised to support the organisation and keep their doors open

Thank you for your support and contribution towards sustaining vital organisations like The Community Program in communities that depend on their services to thrive.
