Keeping Village Families Safe from Malaria

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear Donors

Karitas Relief Mission continues to work with vulnerable families in our villages to reduce the suffering and loss caused by malaria. Malaria remains a serious threat to children, pregnant women, and other vulnerable members of our communities, especially where families have limited access to mosquito nets, prevention information, and timely medical care.

Our malaria prevention activities focus on helping families understand how malaria is transmitted, encouraging the use of mosquito nets, promoting early treatment, and strengthening community awareness about prevention.

Progress This Period

During this reporting period, Karitas Relief Mission continued mobilizing community members and families to take malaria prevention seriously. Community members were encouraged to sleep under mosquito nets every night, keep their homes and surroundings clean, remove stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed, and seek medical attention as soon as malaria symptoms appear.

Our team also continued listening to families about the challenges they face in protecting themselves and their children from malaria. These discussions have helped us understand that many vulnerable households still need mosquito nets and continued health education.

A Continuing Concern

The impact of malaria continues to deeply concern our team. On Wednesday, our community was saddened by the loss of a two-month-old baby who died after suffering from malaria. This loss has continued to shock the Karitas Relief Mission team because preventing malaria and protecting vulnerable families is one of the key priorities of our community programs.

The death has strengthened our determination to continue educating families and mobilizing support for malaria prevention. Every child lost reminds us of the importance of ensuring that families have the knowledge, protection, and support they need to prevent malaria.

Community Response

Community members have continued to participate in discussions about malaria prevention and have shared their experiences and concerns. Families are increasingly encouraged to take preventive measures seriously, particularly for young children.

Our activities include:

- Educating families about malaria prevention.

- Promoting consistent use of mosquito nets.

- Encouraging parents to protect young children from mosquito bites.

- Encouraging families to seek medical care early when malaria symptoms appear.

- Raising awareness about keeping homes and surrounding areas clean.

- Identifying households that are most vulnerable and need additional support.

- Mobilizing resources for mosquito nets and other malaria-prevention activities.

Challenges

Despite the progress made, significant challenges remain. Some vulnerable families still lack adequate mosquito nets, while poverty makes it difficult for households to consistently access preventive materials and healthcare.

The continued loss of children to malaria shows that our prevention efforts must reach more families and must be sustained over time.

Next Steps

Karitas Relief Mission plans to continue community sensitization and mobilization while seeking additional support to provide mosquito nets to vulnerable households.

We will also continue working with families to promote early recognition of malaria symptoms, early treatment, and practical measures that can reduce exposure to mosquitoes.

Conclusion

The fight against malaria remains an urgent priority for Karitas Relief Mission. The recent loss of a two-month-old baby has reminded us of the seriousness of the situation and strengthened our commitment to protecting village families.

We are grateful to everyone who supports this work. With continued partnership and resources, we can reach more vulnerable families, provide life-saving mosquito nets, strengthen prevention awareness, and help reduce unnecessary deaths from malaria in our communities.
