Dear Donors
Families in Namakwa and surrounding villages continue to face a serious risk of malaria, especially during the rainy season when mosquito numbers increase. Many families live in homes where mosquitoes can easily enter, while some households have limited access to effective mosquito prevention measures.
Karitas Relief Mission continues to work with families and community members to promote practical ways of preventing malaria. Community members are being encouraged to sleep under mosquito nets, use mosquito repellents where available, keep their surroundings clean, and remove stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed.
What Is Happening on the Ground
Community members have reported increased mosquito activity following the heavy rains. Some families have also reported cases of people becoming sick with malaria symptoms. This situation has increased the need for families to remain vigilant and take preventive measures every day.
Our team continues to share malaria-prevention messages with families, particularly encouraging parents and caregivers to protect children, pregnant women, and other vulnerable household members from mosquito bites.
Community Response
Families are increasingly recognizing that malaria prevention requires daily action. Community members are participating in discussions about keeping homes and compounds clean, reducing mosquito breeding areas, and ensuring that children sleep under mosquito nets.
We are also encouraging families to seek medical attention quickly when someone develops symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, weakness, or other signs that may be associated with malaria.
Challenges
The rainy conditions continue to create favorable environments for mosquitoes. Some families also face difficulties accessing adequate mosquito-prevention supplies and health services. These challenges make continued community education and prevention activities important.
Next Steps
Karitas Relief Mission will continue working with village families to strengthen malaria prevention awareness, encourage early treatment, and promote safer household environments. We will continue listening to community members and responding to the needs identified on the ground.
Protecting families from malaria requires consistent community participation. By working together, families can reduce exposure to mosquitoes and help protect children and other vulnerable members of the community.
