Update: Where your support is going

Outreach to the district leaders

Dear friends, supporters, donors and believers in our Whisper family,

At Whisper Hospital, our mission has always been simple: to make sure that children, mothers, families and now the wider community can access quality healthcare when they need it, regardless of the time of day.

Keeping a hospital open 24 hours a day, seven days a week is not easy. It requires doctors, nurses, equipment, reliable water, electricity, diagnostic services, medicines and continuous investment in our people and facilities.

Over the past months, we have been working extremely hard not only to keep Whisper Hospital open, but to make it stronger, more sustainable and better able to serve our community.

Every donation we receive helps us move one step closer.

One of the biggest decisions we have made is to expand Whisper Hospital from primarily a paediatric and maternal hospital into a more comprehensive general hospital.

Children and mothers remain at the heart of Whisper, but we have recognised that the families bringing their children to us also need healthcare.

Adults are increasingly living with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses that require regular medical attention, early diagnosis and specialist care.

Our goal is therefore to build a hospital where the whole family can receive care under one roof.

We have also signed agreements with several insurance partners to make our services accessible to more patients and to help strengthen the long term sustainability of the hospital.

A major part of keeping our patients with us and improving continuity of care is making sure that the services they need are actually available when they come to the hospital.

We are therefore working towards having more specialists regularly stationed at Whisper Hospital.

Currently, our medical team includes:

• A Paediatrician available four days per week
• A Gynaecologist available five days per week
• A Physician available three days per week
• General Practitioners available every day and throughout the night

We have also employed a radiographer who is available seven days a week.

The radiographer currently supports our ultrasound services and will also operate our future digital X ray service.

This is extremely important for emergencies. A patient should not arrive at Whisper Hospital and then have to travel somewhere else simply because an essential diagnostic service is unavailable.

Our aim is to be ready.

We do not believe healthcare should only begin when someone becomes sick enough to enter a hospital.

That is why community outreach has become an important part of our work.

Every weekend, our team conducts an outreach programme, including visits to churches on Sundays and community activities on Saturdays.

We are also carrying out weekly corporate and workplace outreaches.

Tutors from our nursing school, together with nurses and other healthcare professionals, visit businesses, organisations and workplaces to provide health education directly to their staff.

These health talks are provided completely FREE OF CHARGE.

During the outreaches, people can:

• Receive health education and practical advice
• Have their blood pressure checked
• Ask healthcare professionals questions about their health
• Learn about prevention and early detection of disease
• Understand when they should seek further medical assessment

We want to create a culture where people seek healthcare before a condition becomes an emergency.

Buildings and machines alone cannot create a good hospital.People do.

We are therefore constantly reviewing how we work, training our employees and improving our internal systems so that our patients receive better, safer and more compassionate care.

We are strengthening supervision, accountability, customer care, follow up and professional development throughout the hospital.

Our goal is not simply to increase the number of patients coming through our doors. We want patients to trust us enough to return when they need us again.

Urgent water system improvement

One of the less visible but extremely important challenges facing the hospital has been our water supply.

Water pressure within Jinja has become unreliable. At times, there is insufficient pressure to push water through the hospital system and into the building.

For a hospital, being without reliable water is simply not an option.

We have therefore started improving our entire water storage and pumping system.

We have already purchased large 5,000 litre water tanks and are working on installing the tanks, pumps and supporting infrastructure required to store water and pump it effectively throughout the hospital.

The estimated cost of the complete water system improvement is:

UGX 10,000,000
Approximately US$2,560
Approximately £1,930

Currency conversions are approximate and will naturally change with exchange rates.

Hospital Parking and Security Improvements

We have also expanded and improved our hospital parking area to make the hospital safer and easier to access for patients, ambulances, staff and visitors.

Together with security lighting and related improvements, approximately:

UGX 5,000,000

has already been invested into this area.

These may appear to be small improvements compared with purchasing major medical equipment, but they make an enormous difference to the safety and everyday operation of the hospital.

Our major next step:

One of our biggest projects is establishing our own modern X ray and expanded diagnostic facility.

We have received quotations for a brand new floor mounted digital X ray system and the infrastructure required to establish the service.

The construction project will not only provide an X ray room. It will include the required X ray and control areas, an ultrasound room, additional specialist consultation and office space, and additional toilet facilities.

This expansion will allow us to accommodate more specialists while providing important diagnostic services directly from Whisper Hospital.

Our current overall project requirement is approximately UGX 200,000,000, covering the following:

Brand New Floor Mounted Digital X Ray System, DR Xpert UGX 130,000,000
Construction and completion of the X Ray room UGX 35,000,000
Refurbished AGFA Drystar 5302 DICOM Printer UGX 12,000,000
Brand New CONTEC 12 Lead ECG Machine UGX 6,500,000
Improvement of hospital water system UGX 10,000,000
Additional installation, infrastructure and project contingency UGX 6,500,000
TOTAL UGX 200,000,000

At current September 2026 reference exchange rates, UGX 200 million is approximately US$51,200 or £38,600.

We are additionally working towards acquiring a dental X ray machine at approximately UGX 6.5 million as we continue developing our dental and diagnostic services.

Why This Matters

This project is not simply about buying an X ray machine.

It is about building a hospital that can stand on its own feet.

It means that when a child arrives after an accident, diagnostic imaging can be available.

It means that when an adult arrives with chest pain, we can have access to an ECG.

It means that when a pregnant mother needs an ultrasound, we have trained staff available.

It means that when an emergency happens at night or during the weekend, our team is better prepared.

And it means that every service we are able to provide internally helps strengthen the hospital and gives us a better chance of remaining open for the community for many years to come.

THANK YOU FOR KEEPING WHISPER HOSPITAL OPEN

To every single person who has donated to Whisper Hospital, supported one of our fundraising campaigns, shared our work, volunteered, fundraised for us or simply encouraged us along the way:

THANK YOU.

Some donations are large. Some are small. But every contribution becomes part of something much bigger.

It becomes water running through our hospital.

It becomes equipment that helps our doctors make a diagnosis.

It becomes trained nurses caring for patients. ‍

It becomes a hospital bed available when somebody needs it.

And most importantly, it helps keep the doors of Whisper Hospital open.

We still have a long way to go, and there is so much more that we want to achieve. But with your continued support, we are improving every day.

Every donation matters. Every improvement matters. Every patient matters.

From everyone at Whisper Hospital, thank you for believing in what we are building and for helping us continue caring for the people who need us.

Together, we can keep Whisper Hospital open.
