Attempted theft of our Solar Panels!

The solar array before the incident

Hello to all our supporters!

Last month, we experienced a significant development at the Maasai Community Radio, and it is with thanks for your contributions that we share this update. Your donations have consistently empowered us to provide impactful Maasai language radio programs and updates for the broader Simanjiro community.

Regrettably, during a recent incident, a group of six individuals staying at the OMASI hostel attempted to steal the solar panels powering both the radio and the borehole at the OMASI center. Although they managed to unmount eight panels, fortunately, they were unsuccessful in taking them. Unfortunately, three panels sustained damage in the process. Following the attempted theft, one person was apprehended by local law enforcement, while the remaining five fled the scene.

The individual in custody has accepted responsibility for the damage and agreed to pay 1 Million Tanzanian Shillings in installments to cover the costs of repairing the three damaged panels. However, to date, only a quarter of the total amount has been received.

Thanks to the ongoing support of individuals like you, we swiftly addressed the situation. With the funds contributed to this project, we were able to purchase new panels and promptly restore the array, minimizing any downtime for the Maasai language radio broadcasts. This incident underscores the critical importance of your donations and highlights the need for enhanced security measures, including fencing around solar arrays in Tanzania. Rest assured, we are actively working to improve the security infrastructure to safeguard our equipment and ensure the continuity of our impactful programs.

Once again, thank you for your support, which enables us to overcome challenges and continue making a positive impact in the Simanjiro community.
