By Roxana Aguilar | Vocational Training and Transition Coordinator
On June 20, 2013, the LA Corps partnered with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce to provide comprehensive work readiness training to 25 young adults! Thanks to generous donors like you, this project has built confidence and professionalism among young adults with limited work experience. The training consisted of hands on workshops in effective communication, career exploration, interviewing, and selecting a professional wardrobe. Participants received first hand tips from working professionals and prepared a personal portfolio. Each portfolio included a resume and application for an employment opportunity of their choice. After completing a resume and application, each participant was interviewed by a working professional and given suggestions for improvement. Corpsmembers dressed professionally and made an excellent impression on the interviewers! Thanks to your generous support the LA Corps Transition Team successfully trained 25 young adults for the working world.
We host volunteer mock interview days on the fourth Thursday of every month for those interested in sharing their professional knowledge. We will also be hosting our 2nd Annual Career Day for corpsmembers and students, taking place on Wednesday July 24th, 2013 from 12:00pm - 3:30pm. We are currently seeking Volunteer Speakers to share their career experiences and pathways! Last year students showed a lot of interest in the Career Day event, which was designed to help corpsmembers identify various career opportunities and learn about the type of planning and execution necessary to become successful within a career. For more information about volunteering, please contact Roxana Aguilar at raguilar@lacorps.org or (213) 840-1079.
The next Transition group will graduate on August 15, 2013 and the next Work Readiness mock interview session will be held on August 22, 2013...we hope you will come and visit our South LA or NorthEast LA site soon. Thank you for your continuing support!
