Girls in rural Benue, Nigeria, face significant barriers to completing their education due to poverty, displacement, early marriage, and limited opportunities. This project uses sports to keep girls engaged in education through school-based competitions, mentoring, life-skills training, environmental education, and academic support. Through GoGreen's flagship Makurdi Green Cup initiative, girls will stay in school, build confidence, improve academic performance, and develop into future leaders
Nigeria has one of the world's largest out-of-school populations, with about 10.2 million children aged 5-14 out of school and one in every five of the world's out-of-school children. Girls face additional barriers including poverty, displacement, early marriage, and gender inequality. In Benue State, recurring conflict has displaced thousands of families. An IOM assessment identified school fees, lack of learning materials, and safety concerns as major barriers preventing access to education
GoGreen will use its flagship Makurdi Green Cup initiative to make education more engaging and rewarding for girls. Through school sports competitions, academic mentoring, life-skills training, environmental education, leadership development, and community advocacy, the project will encourage regular school attendance, strengthen girls' confidence, improve academic performance, and create supportive school and community environments that help girls stay in school.
The project will help more girls stay in school, complete their education, and develop the confidence, leadership, and life skills needed to reach their full potential. By strengthening community support for girls' education through sports, the initiative will reduce school dropout, delay early marriage, and create a generation of educated young women who contribute to healthier families, stronger communities, and sustainable development.
