For 52 vulnerable children in Baghdad, the Hope Bus is their only path into school and toward a different future. Many are orphans or come from very poor families, have been working on the streets to survive, or lack the legal documents needed to enroll in schools. For one year, they receive education, daily meals, social support, and legal help to obtain documents and enter formal school. One of our three Hope Buses is now at risk of closing. We need $96,000 to keep it running for another year.
In some of Baghdad's poorest communities, children are shut out of school by poverty, child labor, family instability, and the lack of legal documents needed to enroll. Many spend their days working on the streets instead of learning. One of ICF's three Hope Buses is now at risk of closing, putting about 52 children at risk of losing the education, meals, care, and protection they rely on each day.
The Hope Bus brings a safe, child-friendly classroom directly into the community. About 50 children receive daily education, nutritious meals, health and social support, clothing, school supplies, and guidance from teachers and a social worker. ICF's Street Lawyers also help children obtain the legal documents they need to enter formal school. Raising $96,000 will keep this Hope Bus operating for 12 months
The Hope Bus is designed to move children from the streets into school and toward a safer, more stable future. Since 2017, more than 1000 children have participated. In the past 2 years, 80% avoided child labor and 95% had the legal documents needed for school. By keeping this bus open, another group of children can gain the education, identity documents, and support they need to build a future beyond poverty and exploitation.
