Change a Girl's Life Through Microentrepreneurship

by Reach Out Cameroon (REO)

The Keep A Girl Alive project enables uneducated and unemployed single mothers and girls to become economically independent through the creation of small businesses. They become empowered, protect themselves from Gender Based Violence and excercise their Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), while providing for their families and developing their communities. More than 110 women have received trainings, cash transfers and loans since "KGA" started in 2012.

Poverty and lack of sexual education make girls pay high costs for one mistake. Early pregnacies put them out of school, then they find themselves without support from their sexual partners, their families, or both. This perpetuates the cycle, men hold higher economic status and women find themselves without bargaining power, they don't decide when or how sexual encounters happen, more pregnacies and STIs follow. This is magnified in communities such as Tole, with high density of migrant women.

In order to be able to say no, women need to be able to feed themselves and their families, by themselves. The project focuses on their economic empowerement, through training, grants and continuous counseling. More economic support is given at different stages, and a long-term relationship is built. This partnership only ends after complete removal from poverty, a moment when the girl goes on to become a mentor of the program. We also coach on Gender Violence and Sexual Rights and Health.

Long-Term Impact

A girl starts a business with a grant about 30 dollars, and after a bit of trail and error, the average business they make is generating about 40 dollars a month after the second month. They keep growing to improve on their businesses and to take care of their feeding and their families, they start taking decisions over their bodies and being independent of men. Girls become role models in their communities and help develop it by creating stable busineses connected to the economic environment
