Keep 5000 Girls In School, Fight Period Poverty

For many girls in rural Kenya, menstruation means missed school days, embarrassment and limited access to safe menstrual products. Through Mount Kenya Trust's school-based community health programme in Meru County, we saw firsthand how this affected girls' confidence, attendance and ability to participate fully in class.

Occasional donations weren't enough. We needed something sustainable, locally produced, and able to support girls year after year.That's why we launched our Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) Programme in 2025.

At our Ndiine site, trained community women produce reusable sanitary towels — creating skills, livelihoods and a locally driven solution in the same stroke. But the programme goes further than products alone. It pairs distribution with menstrual health education, helping girls understand their bodies and manage their periods safely and confidently.

The results so far:

• 2025: 12,064 reusable sanitary towels processed; 3,000 distributed across six schools
• 2026 ( Jan - Aug): 3,354 processed; 1,111 distributed across eight schools in counties surrounding Mount Kenya

As our Community Health Project Manager, Ketty Gitonga, said at the launch: "It means no girl should ever miss school again because of her period."

Where we're going

Our goal is to reach 1,500 girls annually while continuing to expand local production, education and access. From six schools in 2025 to eight in 2026, the model is working — and it's ready to grow.
