In our last update, we mentioned an awareness-raising campaign that the o.b. Brand launched in partnership with Huru International. We’re happy to report that this successful campaign raised $15,000 for Huru and generated media coverage that has increased awareness of the problems Huru is addressing.
We also reported that by the end of 2011 Huru had reached 20,000 girls throughout Kenya. That’s a significant milestone, and we’re starting 2012 with an even bigger bang: we have 20,000 more Huru Kits produced and ready to go! Your generous contribution is a big part of that, and our New Year’s resolution is to triple the number of girls who receive Huru Kits in 2012, enabling them to stay in school and providing them with life-saving HIV/AIDS prevention information.
Huru is currently strengthening and expanding the educational outreach component of our program. 30 peer educators have been trained and are ready to lead distribution events and work with beneficiaries to provide them with key HIV prevention and empowerment messaging. In addition, Huru’s peer educators will ensure that our beneficiaries know where and how to access essential services, including voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS, life skills development programs, and other resources designed to keep at-risk girls safe and healthy.
We thank everyone for their generous support, and we look forward to keeping you posted on our progress throughout the year. In the meantime, you may want to check out this recent Huffington Post piece featuring Huru:
