The Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) will start rolling out its program called Learning Effectively through Enhanced Pedagogies (LEEP) in Coron town, Palawan, Philippines beginning August 2014. With the initial funding of US $8,890 that KCFI was able to generate through Global Giving, an online donation platform for non-profit organizations, teachers and principals from 18 public schools will be trained from this first run of LEEP in the town that was severely devastated by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013.
LEEP is geared towards equipping teachers and principals with the necessary skills for effective teaching-learning processes. For LEEP in Coron, workshops on effective learning approaches will especially focus on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) as well as climate change adaptation. Following studies that show how school children can help save lives during calamities using their single-mindedness to practice what they learn in school without hesitation, LEEP will enable teachers on how to best prepare their students during emergency situations, and become more resilient for future disasters. The LEEP-DRRM Module in Coron has already been developed and pilot-tested. KCFI has also produced a series of animated short videos for this training, which can be viewed at http://kchonline.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=188&Itemid=179.
KCFI continues to enjoin donors to support this cause and help reach the funding goal of US $30,000 that will benefit all 38 public schools with a combined population of 13,000 students in Coron, Palawan. Through this effort, KCFI believes that by empowering students to be prepared and pro-active during calamities, they will not only be able to save their own lives, but also those of their families and neighbors as well.
