Jakelin graduates from Pre-K at Compartir!
Dear Friends,
Thank you for continuing to support our partners in Cambodia, Guatemala, and Honduras. We are excited to share some outcomes from last quarter from our partners and are especially excited to let you know about two particular bits of news:
1. Los Patojos’ new school is now open! Steven brought his droid to show you: http://youtu.be/8fdzTAXpdI0.
After students’ winter break, they returned to study at the new “Centro Socioeducativo Lic. Magno Rudy Romero Arevalo”, named after Juan Pablo’s father who inspired him to follow his dreams. With this transition, their non-traditional educational system has been officially recognized and received national accreditation for Kindergarten-6th Grade, forever changing the history of their community and the education system in Guatemala. 175 students are now enrolled at Los Patojos full time! Their plan is to receive national accreditation next year for 6th-8th Grades and the following year for 9th-11th upon the addition of workshops and vocational training.
2. Phymean, Founder and Director of PIO in Cambodia, has been nominated for the World’s Children’s Prize!
Here’s the ful story: http://worldschildrensprize.org/phymeannoun
Additional outcomes:
Los Patojos in Jocotenango, Guatemala:
- 165 students were enrolled in afterschool programs from October through December.
- The clinic diagnosed 87 children in October and 66 in November, as well as family members during both months.
- The nutrition program served 7,726 lunches, 6,513 snacks, and 993 dinners from October to November.
- Journalism has become increasingly popular. Due to a new available space there has been a production of a semester magazine, an education program on journalism to community members, and a documentation of the activities taking place.
PIO in Phnom Penh, Cambodia:
- Enrollment in both Borey Keila (BK) and Stung Mean Chey (SMC) have shown an increase of just over 100 students in the past year. Now there is a total of 1,306 students enrolled in school. Of those students, 800 of them are funded and supported by JustWorld, which has provided a complete supply of materials and uniforms for each student.
- Pass rates have improved, with an 85% pass rate at BK, and an 83% pass rate at SMC. These results are satisfactory since tests have now been standardized to ensure a consistent and valid assessment.
- Cultural dance performances are a regular feature for PIO. There have been a number of visitors from Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Maybank executives whohave come by to watch the performances.
- At PIO, the children are in far better health conditions than expected. There are numerous visits to the nurse each month, and two visits from Australia Universities that provided treatment and referral to clinics if deemed necessary. This is a testament to the effectiveness of the health and nutrition program run by PIO and sponsored by JustWorld.
Asociacion Compartir in Tegucigalpa, Honduras
- Compartir held a "Youth Art Festival" to promote art and culture at the national theatre, reaching 800 people. For 90 students, it was their first time being at a theatre and they were the starts of the show!
- 3,494 children and youth participated in activities at 4 different community libraries
- 58 children chose a story to take home and explained what they learned to their families- many of whom do not have books at home
- The school year came to a close with graduations of children and youth in multiple educational areas: pre basic, vocational workshops, artistic workshops, food processing, computer courses, and English courses in basic and advanced levels, which are great achievements for the communities.
We greatly appreciate your genorosity and look forward to many more results this year!
Have a wonderful day!
