Hello Friends,

We hope you’re enjoying the holidays with near ones and dear ones and even ones from afar. All of our projects have had a fruitful past couple of months and all of their hard work has paid off. Here are the Top 5 updates from each this term:

People Improvement Organization (PIO) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia:

  1. Enrollment at both schools, Borey Keila (BK) and Stung Mean Chey (SMC), remains steady and registration is increasing- 2 temporary classes were added at SMC to host 75 new students.
  2. Pass rates suggest consistent achievement in all classes: BK is at 68% and SMC at 78%. (A more challenging English curriculum was introduced at BK that the students are adjusting to, but will improve learning and their abilities.)
  3. 115 students are enrolled in high school and only two have failed to pass; they will repeat their grade level.
  4. 55 families were visited by the social worker during this term, reporting on the importance of PIO in their children's lives as most do not have the means to support their families with basic food and housing.
  5. The nurse continues to see a large number of children each month, mostly for minor cases. The consistency is evidence of the children's trust in her as well as the effectiveness of her work.

Los Patojos in Jocotenango, Guatemala:

  1. Los Patojos has been receiving worldwide attention for the benefit it provides to children and youth in Jocotenango as a result of founder and director Juan Pablo's recognition as a 2014 CNN Top 10 Hero! Juan Pablo is our second partner to receive this huge accolade and testament to his work.
  2. 16 out of 20 students receiving scholarships passed school this year!
  3. The health clinic served 304 patients, ranging from a 1 month old to a 79 year old with the main cases being for respiratory, metabolic, and gastrointestinal issues.
  4. 7,678 lunches were served in addition to 7,916 snacks and 975 dinners for students staying late to participate in the "Institute of Cultural Action"'s break dance, photography, art, and theatre groups.
  5. The students finished out the school year at Los Patojos and await an exciting new change- when they return to classes in January, it will be at Los Patojos' brand new center down the street!

Asociación Compartir in Tegucigalpa, Honduras:

Fact: only 45% of children between 4 and 5 years old attend pre-school. This rate is even lower in rural areas. In total, 6 out of 10, i.e. 1.1 million children and youth, fall outside of the system, affecting not only their self-esteem, but also their competitiveness and productive capacity.

  1. 3,158 boys, girls, and youth participated in reading activities in community centers and libraries.
  2. 100 children were invited to watch a movie at the university- 90% of them had never been to a movie theatre before and had an unforgettable experience.
  3. They held a book fair, science fair, and art festival, integrating 300 people in each community.
  4. They've recovered public spaces that were once dangerous and now operate activities in them, a great benefit to the community.
  5. The communities and educational centers they work with have been getting more involved as the 'bibliomovil' has become an example and inspiration to other institutions in the country. It was also recognized by the national university.
  6. *Bonus*: The journalism group interviewed Ronny Salinas, a journalist from Radio America, produced a spot on children's rights, and visited the most important radio network in the country, Emisoras Unidas!

“Each day, leaders emerge and we are privileged to see the great potential that exists within these communities. Truncated by lack of opportunities, through JustWorld they have these opportunities to succeed and be good citizens.”

Thank you for your love and support!

Yours Truly,

The JustWorld Team
