JA of Southern California's Report on Impact

By Amanda Sattler | Executive Vice President

Thank you for your investment to support this vital program!!!  Because of your generous support, we were able to ensure that students (in grades 6-10) from low-income schools were able to benefit from this meaningful program, free of charge, including waiving the per student site visit fee.

Five years after its launch, JA Finance Park  remains one of Junior Achievement of Southern California’s most impactful program.  Each year this six-week curriculum unit combines lessons in personal financial literacy (including units on income, taxes, budgeting and debt) with a culminating day-long site visit to the 10,000 square foot facility located adjacent to Griffith Park.  Through this blended curriculum students in grades 6-10 are provided both practical information and the opportunity to put their newfound knowledge to use, as they work to develop and manage a household budget based on a predetermined set of criteria.

Finance Park is not an easy program—from the classroom lessons through to the site visit, each of JA Finance Park’s components is intended to strengthen student’s math and social science skills, and challenge students to understand how their choices (in whether or not to attend college, when to begin a family, and how they manage their incomes) have a lasting impact on opportunities available to them throughout their lives.  And yet, even with the significant commitment of time and the challenging curricula, and the cost-sharing that many schools have to assume in order to participate, JA Finance Park is remains one of our most popular programs for both middle and high school groups.
