Understanding Food Security

Food security measures the availability of safe, healthy food and an individual’s ability to access it.

Conversely, food insecurity is when safe, healthy food isn’t available or when individuals aren’t able to access it.

Food security isn’t just about having enough food to eat — it extends to the nutritional quality of the food and its effect in promoting a healthy life.

According to the United Nations' Committee on World Food Security, a person is food secure only when he or she has regular access to enough safe and nutritious food to remain healthy and lead an active life.

What Are the Components of Food Security?

There are many definitions of food security. The World Food Programme defines it in four components: availability, access, utilization and stability.

Food availability is whether or not food is actually present for people to access. It includes elements of food systems and production, reserves, markets and transportation.
Then, if food is available, do families and households have the ability to take advantage of it? That is food access.
Utilization addresses whether or not people have adequate food consumption to meet their nutritional needs and sustain their energy. Good utilization is the result of good care and feeding practices, food safety and preparation, dietary diversity and healthy distribution of food within families.
Finally, stability is when the first three elements are consistently met. Environmental, economic, social and political factors can all be a sources of instability that contribute to food insecurity.

Why Is Food Security Important?

Food security is important because, when people lack access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food, they suffer deficiency-related malnutrition that harms their well-being and development.

If a child's food intake doesn’t give them the nutrition needed for healthy early childhood development, acute and long-term consequences, such as wasting and stunting, can result.

Low weight-for-height is known as wasting. It is an acute condition primarily associated with recent and severe weight loss.
Low height-for-age is known as stunting. It is the result of chronic or recurrent undernutrition.

Three ways you can make a difference on Hunger in Local Communities

Over the past two years, the pandemic created a dire situation regarding hunger and malnutrition, reversing decades of progress made in the fight against poverty and hunger in low and middle-income countries around the world.

Unfortunately, the Local Communities didn’t have much time to recover. Conflict, political instability, economic shocks, and weather extremes led to even greater food insecurity in 2023. According to the “Join the challenge and show your $1.90 plate.,” Children in Local Communities experienced acute (or crisis-level) food insecurity – an increase of nearly 1000 children people since 2020. And more children are continued to suffer from wasting due to acute malnutrition, leaving them vulnerable to stunted growth, disease, and death.

Charitable Incorporated Community Organization Uganda found hunger and malnutrition to be a significant issue for the children in its program and their families. Although some of Local Communities could easily be identified by the guiding staff view in our “View All Gifts Catalog” list – including Food Interventions – food insecurity continues to impact each community where the Cico Uganda child development organization works.

Knowing the community, Charitable Incorporated Community Organization Uganda immediately responded to the need. James, the Project Director, shares, “We acted directly and promptly to the actual needs of families, with the foremost need being food. We are assured that our families are not going to bed hungry.” Through intervention funds, the project provided 284 families with unconditional cash transfers to help parents and caregivers buy food and meet immediate needs. Before the support, most families did not have enough to eat. James says, “If Charitable Incorporated Community Organization Uganda had not provided the food money, I would have been chancing every day, hoping for a miracle.”

So, on this Hunger Intergentions, how can you make a difference for hungry children and families? Cico - Uganda shares three ways:

Get the facts on hunger. Learn how hunger affects children and their families. Explore how Our Gifts Catalog is designed to change lives in communities. Read up on topics like food security or malnutrition. Share what you learned with those in your sphere of influence and spread the word about the growing food crisis.

Become part of the solution through support. Find humanitarian organizations that work with developing nations and support them. Cico Uganda’s response to the local community food crisis is two-fold: providing food parcels and cash transfers to stop hunger in the short term – and empowering families with seeds, fertilizer, livestock, and training so they’ll have sustainable food supplies in the long term. Each of these solutions is made possible through financial support. As the staff reflects on the aid distributed in her community, we note, “We have demonstrated God’s love to families who have felt the Lord working in their lives through our supporters.”

Pray for Cico Uganda’s local community Organization. Cico Uganda works amidst 232 child households in a small local community, and our staffs are trained to identify malnutrition and hunger and take immediate action to address it. Pray that God would equip our Local Community Organization and staff members with wisdom, protection, endurance, and the resources to fight hunger and provide food security to children and families in their communities.

Yes, you’re helping nourish their bodies and their souls, as together we share the Good News with those we feed those in need.

With the generous provision of nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children by Charitable Incorporated Community Organization Uganda, thousands of children receive a hot meal prepared daily by our network of volunteers.

The guarantee of a daily meal gives these boys and girls a chance to get a primary education while offering them hope for a better, brighter future. And since these meals are delivered through local church partners, the children also receive spiritual nourishment to help them grow in Christ.

Kids who go to school everyday receive a hot meal. Most of the time the only meal they are going to get is at school. We need more friends like you to help us feed provide nourishment to these kids.

Providing hot nutritious meals is one way we connect with individuals by meeting a physical need. We look to God’s holy word and see that deep conversations took place during shared meals together. This presents the opportunity to share Christ with hurting people who need to hear of His love!
