June saw the end of the second year of training in a three-year program for tailoring, leatherworking, and weaving students at the main center in Niamey (71 students) and weaving schools in two villages (24 students) in the Tillabéri region.  This year we received enough funding to finally begin training in French and mathematics for the students in Niamey in addition to the vocational training. With about half of our students having never attended a school before enrolling with us, this is an important step in improving the quality of our training. We are currently seeking funding to complete a third year of training, and we plan for our students to take the national exam to receive a high school diploma next year. We are unique among vocational training school in Niger in that we do not charge fees for training and we do not require any prior academic background before enrolling.

In December, DIMA started a new class in tailoring for 30 women recuperating at the Centre National de Reference des Fisticules Obstetricales (CNRFO). Training will be completed at the end of August. This is a repeat of a project done in 2023. We saw how the first project transformed the participants’ lives and we are delighted that we have been able to raise enough funding to offer the training to the new group. This new group has been especially enthusiastic about the program and we look forward to seeing their progress after they complete the program.
