SUPPORT DISPLACED WOMEN FROM ARTSAKH

Dear Supporters,

It is a pleasure to reconnect with you and to share another update from the “For Equal Rights” community.

Since our last report, our work has continued to grow across several interconnected areas: supporting women affected by displacement, strengthening civic and media literacy, advancing human rights education, and creating opportunities for people to become more active and informed participants in their communities. Across these efforts, our central approach remains the same to move beyond short-term support and build knowledge, confidence, practical skills, and long-term agency.

The experience we have gained through our programs has also shaped the way we design new initiatives. We increasingly connect individual empowerment with community action, so that participants are not only beneficiaries of support, but also become people who can contribute to positive change around them.

The Current Context

The communities we work with continue to face a combination of economic, social, and informational challenges. Women in particular may experience barriers to professional development, civic participation, and access to reliable information, while displaced women continue to navigate the longer-term consequences of forced displacement and the difficult process of rebuilding stability and independence.

At the same time, the information environment has become increasingly complex. Disinformation, manipulative narratives, misleading online content, and information insecurity can affect people’s ability to make informed decisions and participate confidently in public life. For FER, this reinforces the importance of combining empowerment work with media literacy, critical thinking, civic education, and digital safety.

Our recent work therefore continues to connect these areas rather than treating them as separate issues. We support women with practical professional skills, while also strengthening their ability to understand their rights, assess information, communicate effectively, and participate in their communities.

What We Have Achieved So Far

We would also like to take a moment to reflect on the progress achieved together with our donors, partners, participants, and wider community.

Through FER’s educational and empowerment initiatives, more than 250 displaced women have been supported. The work has helped participants strengthen professional confidence, explore sustainable income opportunities, and rebuild greater stability in their lives.

Our approach has developed into an Integration and Empowerment Pathway that combines practical professional development with longer-term resilience:

Business literacy: Participants have received training in financial literacy, financial security, credit risk assessment, taxation basics, and navigating the Armenian labor market.

Entrepreneurship: Women have been supported to turn professional ideas and skills into sustainable small businesses and independent income opportunities.

Digital presence and visibility: Communication and Social Media Marketing training has provided practical tools for promoting products and services and reaching wider audiences.

Professional training: Beneficiaries have participated in vocational education in fields including Beauty & Aesthetics, Culinary Arts, Sewing and Design, Digital Skills, and other specialized services.

The “Jumpstart Toolkit”: Graduates can receive essential professional tools and equipment that enable them to begin working and developing independent sources of income.

The impact of these activities is not limited to the formal implementation period. Many women continue to use the skills they gained in their daily lives, small businesses, and career development, while FER maintains contact with beneficiaries and continues involving them in educational, awareness, and community-based initiatives.

Our “Buy from Artsakh Residents” online platform also continues to serve as a space connecting displaced women entrepreneurs with the broader public. The latest reporting period recorded more than 6,900 members, reflecting the continuing value of community-based platforms for visibility, solidarity, and economic connection.

Showcasing Our Broader Work: “Unified Women for Rights”

One example of how FER is developing the next generation of its work is our “Women Leadership Academy” initiative. The project brings together two groups, women from remote regions of Armenia and women displaced from Artsakh,  and is designed to connect empowerment, civic participation, media literacy, and community action.

Rather than focusing only on training, the proposed model is structured as a pathway from understanding needs to building skills and then putting those skills into practice. It reflects FER’s broader effort to create programs in which participants become active contributors within their communities.

The initiative is built around several interconnected components:

Leadership Academy: Forty women participate in an intensive five-week learning process covering human rights and democratic governance, media and information literacy, soft skills, community development and project management, legal frameworks, economic empowerment, and digital safety.

Mentorship and project development: Participants develop community project concepts, with ten initiatives selected for further mentoring based on feasibility, community impact, and sustainability.

Community action: The ten selected initiatives would then be implemented with FER providing administrative and overall support. Each project would be designed as a tangible contribution to a local community.

The project is also representative of FER’s wider strategic approach. It brings together our experience in human rights education, media literacy and civic education, policy dialogue, women’s leadership, and youth and community engagement. It is an example of how our work increasingly aims to connect personal empowerment with stronger communities and more informed civic participation.

Supporting Our Communities Beyond Individual Projects

A central principle of FER’s work is that a project should not end with its final activity. We aim to maintain relationships with participants, create opportunities for continued engagement, and connect alumni with other educational, awareness, and community initiatives. This continuity allows knowledge and confidence gained through one activity to become a foundation for further participation.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, FER remains committed to building programs that respond to both immediate needs and longer-term structural challenges. We will continue supporting displaced women and vulnerable groups through professional and educational opportunities while expanding work on media literacy, human rights, civic engagement, community resilience, and women’s leadership.

Our experience has shown us that sustainable impact is strongest when practical support, knowledge, community connections, and opportunities for action come together. We therefore continue working toward a model in which participants are not only supported in rebuilding their own stability, but are also equipped to contribute to the resilience and development of the communities around them.
