Supporting Every Child: Bringing Hope Beyond Treatment in Cambodia (May- Aug 2026)

Overview

From May to August 2026, Japan Heart continued its efforts to provide life-saving treatment for children with cancer in Cambodia, while working toward a long-term goal: closing the survival gap between low-resource settings and high-income countries.

For children undergoing cancer treatment, long hospital stays can mean spending months away from their everyday lives, friends, and the simple joys of childhood. In addition to the physical challenges of treatment, children and their families may face fear, anxiety, and emotional stress throughout the treatment journey.

During this period, Japan Heart continued to provide medical care while creating opportunities for children to play, enjoy special activities, and spend meaningful time with their families and others. We also followed the treatment journeys of individual patients, seeing how continuous medical and emotional support can help children and their families face the challenges of childhood cancer.

These efforts are part of Japan Heart’s commitment to providing comprehensive care that supports not only children’s health, but also their well-being and quality of life throughout their treatment journey.

Key Updates & Achievements

1. Bringing Joy to Patients During Treatment within Oncology Ward Event (May 11, 2026)

Japan Heart held a nail salon and magic show for children receiving cancer treatment and their families at the Japan Heart Asia Children’s Medical Center. Children and parents enjoyed choosing colorful nail designs, while a magic show brought smiles and laughter to the ward.

Achievement: The event provided children and their families with an opportunity to relax, express themselves, and enjoy a positive experience together during a challenging period of treatment.

2. Creating Opportunities for Outdoor Play (Jun. 23, 2026)

Japan Heart began providing children receiving cancer treatment with opportunities to play outdoors within the hospital grounds. Because many children must remain in the ward for months due to their weakened immune systems, careful infection-control and safety measures were established to make outdoor activities possible.

Achievement: Weekly outdoor activities now give children opportunities to enjoy fresh air, sunlight, and play safely during their long hospital stays.

3. Patient Story: A Year of Treatment, Kibin’s Story (Jul. 20, 2026)

Kibin, five-year-old boy diagnosed with Wilms tumor, has been receiving treatment at Japan Heart since June 2025. He underwent chemotherapy and surgery, while his mother received continued support from the medical team throughout their long treatment journey. 

After more than a year of treatment, Kibin is approaching discharge, pending further examinations.

Achievement: His journey demonstrates how continuous medical care and support can help children and their families move forward through a long and difficult cancer treatment journey.

4. Patient Story: From Tears to Smiles, Bunriap’s Story (Aug. 03, 2026)

Bunriap, 11-year-old boy receiving treatment for neuroblastoma, initially struggled with pain, fear, and loneliness after beginning treatment at Japan Heart. As his treatment progressed and he received continued support from doctors, nurses, and staff, his pain improved and he gradually became more comfortable in the hospital environment.

He now enjoys visiting other patients and playing in the playroom.

Achievement: His story highlights the importance of providing emotional and social support alongside medical treatment, helping children regain a sense of comfort and connection during hospitalization.

Upcoming Goals

Japan Heart will continue providing medical treatment and comprehensive support to children with cancer and their families.

We will continue weekly outdoor activities while strengthening infection-control and safety measures, as well as creating opportunities for children to play and enjoy meaningful experiences during treatment.

We will also continue supporting each child throughout their treatment journey, with the goal of providing care that supports both their health and well-being.
