The project aims to provide essential iron chelation therapy for 1,023 thalassemia patients across Sindh province. Each patient requires blood transfusions every two weeks, leading to dangerous iron overload. Monthly iron chelation therapy is critical to prevent organ damage and improve quality of life. This initiative supports the health and well-being of thalassemia patients by managing iron levels and ensuring they receive the necessary medical care.
Iron overload is one of the most common complications of Thalassemia Major. Frequent blood transfusions cause iron levels in the blood to rise, which can lead to serious consequences including death. Most of the patients have a low socioeconomic background and cannot afford to buy expensive infusion pumps and oral iron chelation medications required to manage this complication.
This project will solve the problem by providing regular iron chelation therapy to thalassemia patients, effectively managing the iron overload caused by frequent blood transfusions. Iron chelation therapy binds excess iron and helps remove it from the body, preventing iron-induced organ damage and complications. By ensuring patients receive this critical treatment monthly, the project will improve their overall health, extend their life expectancy, and enhance their quality of life.
The long-term impact of this iron chelation therapy project includes improved health and life expectancy for over 1,000 thalassemia patients in Sindh. Effective management of iron overload will reduce organ damage and severe complications, enhancing patients' quality of life and enabling better participation in social and economic activities.
