Ensuring no child suffers with Iron Overload

By Maryam Asim | Management Representative

1. Introduction

Thalassemia is a life-threatening genetic blood disorder that requires regular blood transfusions for survival. However, frequent transfusions lead to iron overload, which can damage vital organs such as the heart, liver, and endocrine system. Iron chelation therapy is essential to remove excess iron and improve patients’ quality of life.

Our project, "Iron Chelation Therapy for Thalassemia Patients," aims to provide life-saving chelation medicine to underprivileged thalassemia patients who cannot afford treatment. Through GlobalGiving’s support, we have been able to make a significant impact on the lives of these patients.

2. Project Activities & Achievements

Key Activities Conducted:

  • Medicine Distribution: Provided iron chelation drugs (Deferasirox, Deferiprone, or Deferoxamine) to 1045 patients.
  • Patient Monitoring: Conducted regular ferritin level tests to assess iron overload and adjust chelation therapy accordingly.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Organized workshops for families and caregivers on the importance of compliance with chelation therapy.
  • Partnerships: Collaborated with local hospitals and thalassemia societies to reach more patients in need.

Impact Achieved:

  • Number of Beneficiaries: 1045 thalassemia patients received chelation therapy.
  • Reduction in Ferritin Levels: 85% of patients showed improved iron levels after consistent treatment.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Patients reported fewer complications (e.g., heart and liver issues) due to controlled iron levels.
  • Increased Awareness: Hundreds of families educated on thalassemia management and treatment adherence.

3. Challenges Faced

Financial Constraints: High cost of chelation drugs limits the number of patients we can support.

Patient Compliance: Some patients struggle with consistent treatment due to economic hardships or lack of awareness.

Healthcare Access: Remote patients face difficulties in traveling to treatment centers for regular check-ups.

4. Next Steps & Future Goals

  • Expand Reach: Provide chelation therapy to more patients in the next year.
  • Fundraising: Launch new campaigns to secure sustainable funding for long-term treatment.
  • Mobile Clinics: Develop outreach programs for remote patients to improve access.
  • Research Collaboration: Partner with medical institutions to explore cost-effective chelation options.

5. Gratitude

We extend our deepest gratitude to GlobalGiving donors, volunteers, and partners for making this life-saving project possible. Your generosity has given hope to thalassemia patients who otherwise would not have access to critical treatment.

Together, we can fight thalassemia and save lives!

Kind Regards

Kashif Iqbal Thalassemia Care Center
