Celebrating being a girl!

By Judy Chelangat | SRHR Programme Officer

2026 International Day of the Girl
2026 International Day of the Girl

Thank you for your support of this project.  We are delighted to bring you this latest update from Judy Chelangat, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Programme Officer.

We have just marked the International Day of the Girl Child and in Kenya we celebrated with an event bringing teenage mothers together, in Bureti sub-county. The theme this year was “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls Rights”. Through facilitated workshops, young mothers explored the challenges they face including early marriages, myths and taboos around menstruation and what rights girls have.

They also learnt about menstrual health and reusable sanitary pads and how to make their own and be able to manage their periods independently.  Reusable pads can be made from old cotton fabric e.g. t-shirts. Learning that access to menstrual products and menstrual hygiene was key to attending school/work was a game changer to the participants. Some of the participants during group work, shared their life story on how they’d miss school 3 days in every month because they couldn’t afford a sanitary towel.

Menstrual Health is a part of our Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) programme and delivered by volunteer ambassadors through schools and in the community. Filamen is an SRHR ambassador, says she was excited to be part of the mobilisation process of this day for the participants because in the process, the people are always curious, excited and looking forward to being a part of the event. Filamen adds that she ensures she is able to spread the exciting news to all members of the community and those that miss could always attend next year because she believes from these events and workshops, girls and women will be able to make informed choices.

A flavour of the workshop responses to the question - Why girls voices matter?

  • Because we are part of the community
  • Because I am part of decision making
  • Because I am part of change
  • Because we are leaders

The day included games and songs to celebrate being a girl and exploring all there is to be proud of as a girl.
