Summary

Over 20,000 refugees and asylum seekers reside in refugee camps in Greece, working to rebuild their lives, gain stable employment, and provide for their families. For many refugees, their dreams and careers were interrupted when they were forced to flee. Many now face discrimination and a lack of access to employment or schooling. We address these barriers by assisting with employment-related administration, language learning, and job-search, supporting successful integration in Greek society.

Challenge

Many people who seek refuge have professional credentials and years of experience in a diverse range of sectors. The ability to work is a key part of long-term social and economic integration, but requires careful navigation of Greek systems and appropriate documentation. Complicated and often slow Greek pathways to legal employment are a significant impediment to finding work. In addition, many people seeking safety face discrimination, and a lack of physical access to employment opportunities.

Solution

We provide administration and employment support services that help residents of Corinth Refugee Camp obtain a Greek tax number and social security number, open a bank account, and search for employment, vital to live and work in Greece. We will also support language learning in Greek and English to expand refugee access to education and employment. These processes are often a major hurdle for people to find reliable employment and access services such as schooling, health care, and housing.

Long-Term Impact

By addressing major gaps in access to employment and education, this project strengthens long-term social and economic integration for people seeking safety while fostering agency and self-determination. It supports refugees and asylum seekers in rebuilding their lives and pursuing their dreams by building foundational skills such as languages and literacy that open pathways to schooling and employment, strengthening local and refugee communities.
