Project Report | Mar 11, 2025
Expanding partnerships for increased gains

By Mary Mutuku | Program Officer

The Provide safe and clean water for 1500 children and women project was aimed at improving water supply and sustaining it to serve the Mutulani community in Makueni County Kenya.

During this period, December 2024 - March 2025, the community has seen multiple programs from four different partners that have been attributed to the Mutulani water project that has continued to assure more benefits to the Mutulani institutions and the community. The partners have been linked to Mutulani Community through the Project Management Committee Chairman, MAWE CBO leadership and local Professionals in efforts of giving back to their community.

To begin with, the Safaricom Foundation supported the Mutulani Secondary school to construct and equip a Computer and Science laboratory. This laboratory has so far been completed and connected with water to enhance the performance in science subjects in the school.

The national government, through the support of World Bank, initiated the construction of Mutulani market to upgrade it into a modern market. One of the factors that led to the approval of the market is the availability of Mutulani borehole water which will support the hygiene of the area, the market will improve trade in the area hence increased household incomes.

Through different stakeholders, a project dubbed Financing Locally led Climate Change Actions [FLOCCA] funded the expansion of Kyanduu earth dam along Kyanduu river which has been the main source of water for the entire community. This project will be initiated before the end of March 2025 aimed at increasing amount of water in the area.

The water project and these other projects have made Mutulani area a model community where now outsiders are coming to learn the approaches the community is using to accomplish the major projects within the community.

The following activity in Mutulani is installation of water ATMs in Mutulani Primary School, Mutulani Secondary and the community Dispensary as well as supply and installation of the same in the completed market. This activity was delayed giving room for the projects by the other partners to be completed as PEN Kenya identifies a suitable partner for that. Most of these projects were being implemented by MAWE CBO and the water managing committee.

Next steps

  • PEN Kenya has identified two water experts/partners namely, Project Maji and Norwa Africa of whom conversations have been initiated to finalize on installation of the technology [water ATMs] that will ensure that the water is regulated and that all water in well costed to enhance project sustainability.
  • Participate in the next GlobalGiving campaigns to increase resource base of the next community programs.
  • Focus on WASH and Climate change actions in and around Mutulani

We sincerely appreciate all our donors and GlobalGiving for the continued partnership and support
