Project Report | Jul 17, 2023
The turning point

By Mary Mutuku | Project Officer

The Provide safe and clean water for 1500 children and women projectaimed at improving water supply and sustaining it to serve the Mutulani community in Makueni County, Kenya has continued to prove its benefits to the whole community since its inception.

The water supply has been adequate and continuous even during the previous experienced drought that lasted for over two years incessantly. Mutulani Secondary School, Mutulani Primary School children and Mutulani Dispensary continue to be the major beneficiaries of this project after good rains were experienced between February and May 2023 and the other sources have water for community use.

The community has now found solace in the bumper harvests and the Mutulani CBO has taken up the role of educating members of the community (on post-harvest management of crops) to enable them store their produce well and avoid selling the food because it is not known whether the next rain season will be favourable and dependable. He noted that it was a turning point and expect prices of all basic commodities to come down’ Mr. James Mutungi, Mutulani Administration and Welfare [MAWE CBO]

Conservation of the nearby Muumandu forest and tree planting around the borehole are strategies ongoing through the efforts of the community who committed to continuously undertake to enhance sustainable supply of water.

The next steps for the Mutulani project and the community include;

  • Continue construction of sand dams to boost water supply along Kyanduu stream for community use
  • Continue planting trees and nurture them to enhance their survival  for borehole sustainability
  • Undertake the second routine maintenance of the borehole
  • Open a bank account by the Project Management Committee for safe keeping of water levies to enhance project sustainability

PEN and the Mutulani Community continue to express their gratitude to GlobalGiving for their continued partnership and support
