VetBooks for Africa Initiatives

At 3:00 a.m. on 17 June, eight veterinary students stood outside the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort with backpacks packed, coffee in hand, and two generously sponsored Ford vehicles loaded to the roof with books, veterinary equipment and donated supplies. Months of planning had led to this moment. As the sun rose and we crossed the Beitbridge border into Zimbabwe, our mission officially began.

While this was a week-long expedition, it represented something much bigger. The journey served as the trial run for our ambitious December expedition, during which our student-led team will travel through seven African countries over five weeks, delivering educational resources and veterinary supplies to institutions and communities where they are needed most.

At VetBooks for Africa, we believe that every veterinary student deserves access to quality educational resources, regardless of where they study. Across much of Africa, universities continue to face shortages of current textbooks, clinical equipment and teaching materials. Through donations and the generosity of supporters like you, we work to bridge that gap.

The highlight of our journey was visiting the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare. We were warmly welcomed by the Dean, faculty members and senior lecturers as we handed over nearly 150 new edition veterinary textbooks, alongside boxes of clinical equipment and teaching resources. These included a brand new microscope, stethoscopes, syringes, needles, refractometers and bandaging materials, resources that will directly support the education and practical training of future veterinarians.

Knowing that these donations will continue to benefit students for many years to come reminds us why this work matters. Every textbook placed on a library shelf, every piece of equipment used in a practical class, and every student given better learning opportunities contributes to stronger animal health across the continent.

Our impact extended well beyond the university. During the week we also delivered donations to Kasipiti Children's Home, where toys, stationery and games brought smiles to children who welcomed us with joyful songs and heartfelt hospitality. We visited Twala Animal Trust, a wildlife rehabilitation centre caring for more than 50 rescued animals, and were inspired by the dedication of the people working tirelessly to protect Zimbabwe's wildlife. We also supported a rural primary animal healthcare clinic and a local primary school, ensuring that every kilometre travelled created an opportunity to make a difference.

Of course, meaningful work is built on meaningful relationships. Between donation handovers and long days on the road, we shared countless unforgettable moments as a team. Our first night was spent in the beautiful Bubye Valley Conservancy with Onderstepoort alumni who reminded us of the incredible network of veterinarians working across Africa. We camped beneath vast African skies, started chilly mornings with steaming cups of coffee, laughed around campfires late into the evening, and even celebrated when the girls managed to pitch their tent before the boys. It was a week filled with hard work, adventure and friendships strengthened by a shared purpose.

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors. We are incredibly grateful to Vitaspec, Savannah Aircraft Africa and Montego Pet Nutrition for believing in our mission and coming on board as our main financial sponsors. We also extend our sincere thanks to the Ford Wildlife Foundation, whose sponsorship of a Ford Everest Sport and Ford Ranger Tremor enabled us to travel nearly 3,000 kilometres safely and reliably while transporting our donations across Zimbabwe. Their support meant that funds which would otherwise have been spent on vehicle hire can instead be invested directly into future outreach projects, and we cannot thank them enough for their immense role in making this trip possible and for believing in us and the work that we do.

As a student-run non-profit organisation, every kilometre we travel, every donation we deliver and every student we support is made possible through the generosity of individual donors, organisations and businesses who believe in our vision. Now, as we prepare for our largest expedition yet, we need your help once again.

In December, VetBooks for Africa will embark on a five-week journey through seven African countries, delivering even more educational resources, veterinary equipment and hope to institutions across the continent. Our storeroom is already filled with donated supplies, but we are still seeking support to make this ambitious journey possible. Fuel sponsorship, vehicle sponsorship, accommodation along our route, financial donations and partnerships of any kind will allow us to reach more communities and maximise every contribution we receive.

Every donation, regardless of its size, helps us place knowledge into the hands of future veterinarians, strengthen veterinary education, improve animal welfare and invest in healthier communities across Africa.
