On December 22, 2018, a tsunami that followed an eruption and partial collapse of the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait struck several coastal regions of Banten in Java and Lampung in Sumatra, Indonesia. At least 437 people were killed and 14,059 were injured. The tsunami was caused by an undersea landslide that followed the eruption of Anak Krakatau; much of that island is now crumbled into the sea. Oxfam, through its local partners the Humanitarian Knowledge Hub, responded with water and sanitation assistance and medical help to affected residents.

Oxfam is currently working in Banten and Lampung, and as of February 15, 2019, has reached a total of 7,024 beneficiaries of the targeted 10,000. Noteworthy achievements include the distribution of 109 m3 liters of water, installation of 14 latrines, and distribution of 920 hygiene kits. In addition, 480 people were reached via mobile clinics, 2,000 were reached with psychosocial support, and 3,000 children were reached with hygiene promotion activities.

Indonesia is one of the most disaster-prone nations in the world, facing humanitarian emergencies this past year that left a number of people dead or thousands missing, and hundreds of thousands more displaced. In addition to working with partners to provide clean drinking water, set up water points and pipelines, build toilets, and distribute hygiene kits, Oxfam is continuing to build the humanitarian capacity of local partners in Indonesia so that they can respond immediately when disaster strikes.
