Today our suspicions have been confirmed. During our first assessment we learned of a massive irrigation system that had been heavily damaged by the earthquake. The government-run and maintained irrigation system supplies water to the rice paddies of Pariaman, the epicenter of the quake. As rice planting time draws near in November thousands of families are worried that their only source of income may not be possible this season. It pains me to think of all those people who have survived the earthquake only to be starving in a few months time because they are unable to grow rice. This comes as a sobering realization as I sit here at the Governor’s Residence attending coordination meetings and strategizing with colleagues on how to make a difference. All day long trucks depart and helicopters fly from here with food and other relief supplies packed to be delivered to the farmers of Pariaman.
