Project Report | Feb 26, 2007
February 2007 Update

By Katherine Zavala | Asia Program Director, IDEX

The biggest impact from lack of water is seen on the female population of the region. Procuring water is considered to be a household task, and thus, it becomes the women’s responsibility. They need to walk miles every day to fetch water for their family in extremely hot and harsh climates. Young girls also need to go and fetch water, which deprives them from going to school. Lack of water and frequent droughts present major challenges in the region.

GRAVIS plans to construct taankas, which are water storage devices that are essential to provide access to water for many villages located in these arid areas. A taanka is an important element of water security in the Thar desert region. GRAVIS has so far completed two of the ten taankas that will be built this year.
