Dr. Steve Epstein, Professor and Chair of Psychiatry from Georgetown University School of Medicine, was in Eldoret at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital from February 26 through March 16. He shared the following update from Kenya:
"In the first week I had the pleasure of supervising Dr. Jessica Ouyang, a triple board resident from IU. Despite the lecturers’ strike, I was able to work closely with the outstanding registrars on rounds and in teaching/supervision sessions. For the last two weeks the medical students were not available. Dr. Kwobah and I met frequently for her work in integrating mental health care into the local communities. I also worked with Lillian Rono during two visits to Mosoriot and one to Turbo.
The registrars and I are planning monthly Skype case conferences but the first one was postponed due to the ongoing strike."
The current national strike of university lecturers is certainly a challenge for Kenyan medical students and beyond. But our efforts continue!
We are so grateful for your support as collaboration continues. Later in 2018, Dr. Anne Walters from Brown University will spend time in Eldoret, and Kenyan registrars hope to visit our AMPATH consortium schools.
