1. Project Summary

The “Improving Maternal & Child Health in Balochistan” project aims to address one of the most critical public health challenges in the region the high maternal and child mortality rates. The project adopts a comprehensive, community-based approach to improve healthcare access, strengthen maternal and child health services, enhance nutrition, and raise awareness among families and communities.

The initiative seeks to reduce maternal mortality from 300 to 200 per 100,000 live births and child mortality from 86 to 60 per 1,000 live births through the establishment of maternal and child health centers, deployment of mobile clinics, introduction of nutrition and awareness programs, and capacity-building of healthcare workers.

Through these actions, BRDP aims to save lives, empower communities, and contribute to a healthier, more resilient future for the people of Balochistan.

2. The Challenge

Balochistan faces one of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in Pakistan.

  • The maternal mortality rate stands at 300 per 100,000 live births, much higher than the national average of 176.
  • The child mortality rate is 86 per 1,000 live births, compared to the national average of 72.

Several factors contribute to these alarming statistics:

  • Limited access to quality healthcare facilities, especially in remote and rural areas.
  • Shortage of skilled birth attendants and trained health professionals.
  • Malnutrition and anemia among women and children.
  • Poor infrastructure and transportation, making it difficult for pregnant women to reach hospitals on time.
  • Low awareness about maternal health, safe delivery, and child nutrition.
  • Poverty and gender inequality, restricting access to essential health services.

These challenges have created a serious health crisis, where thousands of preventable deaths occur each year due to lack of timely medical care and basic health education.

3. The Solution

The project provides a comprehensive and sustainable solution to improve maternal and child health outcomes in Balochistan. The main strategies include:

  1. Strengthening Healthcare Services:

o   Establishing and upgrading Maternal & Child Health (MCH) Centers in underserved areas.

o   Introducing mobile health clinics and telemedicine services to reach remote communities.

  1. Improving Access to Skilled Care:

o   Training midwives, community health workers, and traditional birth attendants in safe delivery practices and emergency obstetric care.

o   Enhancing coordination between community volunteers and district health departments.

  1. Enhancing Nutrition:

o   Implementing nutrition programs for pregnant and lactating women and children under five.

o   Distributing micronutrient supplements, fortified foods, and educational materials on healthy diets.

  1. Raising Awareness:

o   Conducting community sessions, health camps, and awareness drives on maternal health, hygiene, breastfeeding, and family planning.

o   Engaging local leaders and religious scholars to promote healthy behaviors and women’s healthcare rights.

By combining service delivery with education and empowerment, the project will create a strong foundation for healthier mothers, healthier babies, and stronger families.

4. Long-Term Impact

The long-term vision of the project is to build healthier, stronger, and more resilient communities across Balochistan. The expected outcomes include:

  • Reduction in maternal and child deaths through improved healthcare services.
  • Healthier pregnancies and safer deliveries, ensuring survival and wellbeing of mothers and newborns.
  • Improved nutrition and immunity among women and children.
  • Increased community awareness and behavioral change toward maternal and child health.
  • Strengthened local health systems and greater trust between communities and health providers.
  • Economic development as healthier families contribute more effectively to society.

Ultimately, the project will help transform the maternal and child health landscape of Balochistan and contribute toward achieving Pakistan’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.

5. Current Status and Progress

The project is currently live on GlobalGiving with a total fundraising goal of USD 75,000. So far, USD 640 has been raised and is safely held in BRDP’s organizational bank account. Once sufficient funds are collected, implementation will begin in selected districts of Balochistan identified based on need, population density, and healthcare accessibility.

Preparatory activities have already begun:

  • Community needs assessments have been conducted to identify high-risk areas.
  • Coordination meetings with district health departments and local partners are ongoing.
  • Initial health awareness materials are being developed in local languages.

These early steps are building a strong foundation for rapid and effective rollout once full funding is achieved.

6. Future Plan

Once implementation begins, BRDP will:

  • Establish three Maternal & Child Health Centers in underserved districts.
  • Deploy mobile health units to reach remote and mountainous communities.
  • Launch nutrition programs for 1,000 mothers and 2,000 children.
  • Train 50 healthcare workers in emergency obstetric and neonatal care.
  • Conduct community awareness sessions reaching over 10,000 people.
  • Integrate telemedicine systems to connect rural patients with doctors in Quetta and Karachi.

Monitoring and evaluation will be continuous, ensuring transparency, effectiveness, and measurable impact.

7. Conclusion

The “Improving Maternal & Child Health in Balochistan” project represents a vital step toward saving lives and building a healthier future for women and children. With your support, we can prevent needless deaths, improve health outcomes, and bring hope to families in one of Pakistan’s most marginalized provinces.

Every contribution no matter the size brings us closer to a future where every mother survives childbirth and every child celebrates their fifth birthday healthy and strong.

Together, we can make Balochistan a place where mothers and children not only survive but thrive.
