Introduction

The Balochistan Rural Development Program (BRDP) is deeply committed to addressing the urgent health challenges faced by women and children in Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but most underserved province. Our project titled "Improving Maternal & Child Health in Balochistan" is a strategic initiative designed to tackle the province’s disproportionately high maternal and child mortality rates, which are among the highest in the country.

Problem Statement

Balochistan suffers from dire health indicators:

  • Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR): 300 per 100,000 live births (national average: 176)
  • Child Mortality Rate (CMR): 86 per 1,000 live births (national average: 72)

These alarming figures reflect systemic gaps in healthcare access, poor nutrition, shortage of skilled birth attendants, poverty, and lack of awareness. The region's vast geography, fragile infrastructure, and marginalized populations make the situation even more critical, demanding urgent and focused intervention.

Project Objectives

This project aims to:

  1. Reduce maternal and child mortality rates by improving healthcare access and service delivery.
  2. Enhance the capacity of local healthcare providers through training and skill-building.
  3. Increase awareness among communities regarding maternal and child health, nutrition, and family planning.
  4. Improve nutrition outcomes for pregnant women, new mothers, and children under five.
  5. Establish or strengthen sustainable and accessible healthcare platforms, especially in remote and underserved areas.

 Proposed Solution and Activities

Our approach is comprehensive, sustainable, and community-focused:

 1. Establishment of Maternal & Child Health Centers

  • Develop or refurbish community-based health centers in targeted districts.
  • Ensure the presence of trained Lady Health Workers (LHWs) and midwives.

2. Mobile Health Clinics & Telemedicine

  • Deploy mobile health units to reach remote communities.
  • Integrate telemedicine solutions to connect patients with urban specialists.

3. Training and Capacity Building

  • Conduct training for Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), midwives, and paramedics.
  • Hold workshops on emergency obstetric care and neonatal care.

4. Nutrition Support Program

  • Distribute nutritional supplements to pregnant women and malnourished children.
  • Launch community awareness sessions on maternal diets, breastfeeding, and child nutrition.

5. Awareness & Behavioral Change Campaigns

  • Run community sessions, media campaigns, and mother support groups to spread knowledge on safe motherhood, immunization, hygiene, and childcare.

Current Fundraising Status

  • Fundraising Target: $74,360 USD
  • Raised So Far: $640 USD
  • Fund Utilization: The amount raised is securely deposited in BRDP’s designated bank account. No expenses have been incurred yet.
  • Planned Disbursement: Project activities will commence once the fundraising goal is achieved in full or partial implementation becomes feasible.

Next Steps

  1. Continue Fundraising: Active donor engagement and campaign outreach on GlobalGiving.
  2. Donor Updates: Regular progress reports will be published to maintain transparency and build trust with our supporters.
  3. Implementation Readiness: Project plans, vendor lists, training materials, and partnerships are being developed and refined in parallel.

Conclusion

The project “Improving Maternal & Child Health in Balochistan” is a life-saving initiative driven by BRDP’s commitment to health equity and social justice. With donor support through GlobalGiving, we believe this project will bring meaningful change to thousands of vulnerable women and children. We thank all our early supporters and continue to call on individuals and institutions around the world to help us meet our goal and begin implementation on the ground.

Together, we can save lives and build a healthier, stronger Balochistan.
