FORMER US WOMEN SOCCER 1999 WORLD CUP TEAM MEMBER

By Nancy Waweru | Project Director

On 17th April, the Mrembo program had an opportunity to host former US 1999 women world cup soccer team member, Lorrie Fair. After playing for the US national women soccer team, Lorrie Fair founded Kick about, an organization that seeks to shine a light on the positive and inspirational side of African football - and to ensure that this side, where football is utilized as a powerful tool for social change, is nurtured and celebrated, after the final whistle in Johannesburg.Kickabout is using whatever means necessary to travel overland from the UK to Cape Town, South Africa and achieve three goals: 1) Celebrate African football at every stop they make; 2) Honor Africa’s humanitarian and sports heroes; 3) Support for the most courageous and innovative sport and development projects in Africa. During her visit to VAP programs she had an opportunity of participating in mrembo programs and learn how girls are being empowered using soccer. “Am so amazed and excited to see how soccer can make a huge impact to the lives of young girls and make them more pro-active in health issues. Indeed soccer is a universal language and can be used all over the global to address such issues which are very critical to the lives of our young generation.” Said Lorrie Fair. Lorrie also spent sometime with the young girls playing soccer with them. “Just to have a role model like Lorrie playing soccer and sharing reproductive health issues together us is a great ray of hope to me and my entire team. I have now been fully empowered and ready to protect my lifestyle and will focus on developing my soccer career.” Said Janet Wanjala, a mrembo program participant.
