The current economic slump in Liberia has led us to take a go-slow approach with our cookstove project. Long existing businesses are closing, gasoline shortages are hampering transportation, and most people are unemployed and scraping by on very little income.
These prevailing circumstances have caused us not to continue our plans to set up a fabricating shop and storefront. Nevertheless, we continue to do research to find viable cookstove models and are monitoring the use of stoves we’ve piloted. Results from the pilot remain positive based on feedback from users of the samples we placed in the field.
As a part of our plan for growth and development in Liberia, VIP has joined the Integrated Forum for Renewable Energy in Liberia (IFREL) and our Country Director is a regular participant in its monthly meetings and professional development seminars. On November 14 and 15, 2018, VIP paid for a high school student attending a vocational education high school and majoring in electricity to attend a Solar Expert Training by African Energy through the auspices of IFREL. This training was aimed at installers and dealers. African Energy is one of the key players for renewable energy in Africa.
